The Dell PowerEdge R260 is a single-processor 1U rack server that can handle ERP, a file server, and several virtual machines in a company that does not need a second processor or GPU cards. It occupies 1U in the rack, can be managed remotely via iDRAC9 Enterprise, and its four slots accept up to 128 GB of DDR5 ECC memory. If you are looking for a sensible entry into Dell 16th generation rack servers, you are starting in the right place.

Dell PowerEdge R260 – who is this 1U server for?

The R260 is a good fit for companies with 10–100 users that are moving their ERP off a desktop computer or a decade-old tower into a rack cabinet. A single CPU socket, four DDR5 slots, a few drive bays. This is not a limitation, but a deliberate boundary: you pay for what a file server and ERP actually use, rather than for a second processor that would sit idle.

Wondering whether a tower might be a better option? We have covered this in the article rack server vs tower – what to choose. If you already know that a rack cabinet is a given, browse the full rack servers category.

Dell R260 for ERP – Comarch Optima, enova365, and SQL Server

If the environment is based on SQL Server, it is not the core count that wins, but clock speed, RAM, and drive performance. Many ERP applications do not distribute work across dozens of threads, so the Xeon E-2434 (4 cores, 3.4 GHz) often delivers more than a processor with a higher number of slower cores. For the database, we use SSDs in RAID 1, not spinning HDDs.

Pre-configured solutions for specific systems are available in the servers for Comarch Optima, servers for enova365, and servers for Microsoft SQL Server categories. Configurations are often tailored to the license type and user count, so review them before selecting a processor.

How much RAM and which processor to choose for the PowerEdge R260?

Our offering includes three Intel Xeon E-series processors. They differ in core count, clock speed, and power consumption, which determines what workloads they are best suited for.

Processor

Cores and clock speed

Cache / TDP

When it makes sense

Xeon E-2414

4 cores, 2.6 GHz

12 MB / 55 W

File server, Active Directory, lightweight application, local backup.

Xeon E-2434

4 cores, 3.4 GHz

12 MB / 55 W

ERP and SQL Server, applications sensitive to single-core clock speed.

Xeon E-2488

8 cores, 3.2 GHz

24 MB / 95 W

Small virtual environment, more machines on a single host.

Memory in the Dell R260 ranges from 16 to 128 GB DDR5 ECC UDIMM, and ECC detects memory errors before they turn into a corrupted database. Module options are available in the server RAM category, and a full processor overview is in the server processors offering.

Example calculation: how much RAM for 25 ERP users?

Virtual machine with an SQL database: 24 GB, machine with a file server: 8 GB, machine with a domain controller: 4 GB, reserve for the host system: 8 GB.

Total 44 GB, meaning a 64 GB configuration with headroom for growth. These are approximate values; actual requirements depend on the ERP system and database size.

DDR5 prices have risen noticeably in 2026, so „adding extra RAM just in case” now costs real money. How to calculate a reasonable reserve is described in the article how much RAM for a business server.

What RAID and what drives for the Dell R260?

The chassis comes in two variants: 2x3.5" Non Hot Plug for large, affordable HDDs (e.g., 2x10 TB in the offering) and 6x2.5" for SATA and SAS SSDs. Choose the first for backup and archival, the second for ERP, databases, and virtual machines.

Controller

Type

When to choose it

What you gain

S160

Software RAID

Simple mirror, limited budget

Lower cost, but RAID is handled by the CPU.

HBA355i

No RAID (pass-through)

Proxmox, ZFS, custom drive management

The system sees drives directly.

H355

Hardware RAID

Windows Server, VMware, RAID 1

CPU offloaded, straightforward management.

H755

Hardware RAID with cache

SQL and higher I/O traffic

Higher write performance for databases.

BOSS-S1

Card for 2 M.2 drives (mirror)

Separating the OS from data

All drive bays remain free for data.

A full list of cards is available in the server RAID controllers category, and media in the hard drives offering. Keep in mind that RAID protects against drive failure, not against deleted files, so backup remains a separate topic.

PowerEdge R260 for virtualization – Proxmox, VMware, and Hyper-V

With the 8-core E-2488 and 64–128 GB RAM, the R260 can handle several lightweight virtual machines: a domain controller, a file server, and an ERP application. For Proxmox, pair it with the HBA355i controller; for VMware and Hyper-V, a hardware RAID controller works well. Solutions tailored to specific platforms are described in the servers for Proxmox and servers for VMware categories.

When backup or VM migration starts to struggle on a gigabit connection, add 2x10GbE SFP+ or 2x25GbE SFP28. Adapters are available in the network adapters category, and fiber optics in the optical modules offering.

What the Dell PowerEdge R260 cannot do – platform limitations

It is better to know this before purchasing than after deployment. What lies beyond the R260's reach:

  • you cannot replace one processor with two, as the server has a single CPU socket,
  • memory tops out at 128 GB, so a large in-memory database requires a larger server,
  • configurations in the offering include a single 450 W or 700 W power supply, meaning no PSU redundancy,
  • model training and GPU-accelerated computing are tasks for AI servers.

A single power supply is a real downtime risk, so for a server that needs to run around the clock, add UPS backup power and a rack cabinet with proper power distribution. Need more performance in the same 1U form factor? Compare with the Dell PowerEdge R360, and for more powerful processors, look at the Dell PowerEdge R660. Previous 1U generations include the R250 and R350.

New Dell R260 with warranty – how do we select the configuration?

Every R260 in the offering is a new CTO-configured server with a 36-month warranty. Choose a pre-configured option from the list, or build your own in the Dell PowerEdge R260 configurator. Warranty options are described in the warranties section.

Not sure whether 4 cores are enough, or you need 8? Contact us via the contact page, and we will match the configuration to your system and user count. A comparison of new and refurbished hardware is available in the article new server vs recertified server.

Frequently asked questions about the Dell PowerEdge R260

Is the Dell PowerEdge R260 sufficient for ERP?

Yes, if it is an ERP system for several dozen users and a single database. For SQL Server, we recommend the Xeon E-2434, 32–64 GB RAM, and SSDs in RAID 1. For a larger database or several hundred users, choose a server with more memory.

How much RAM does the Dell R260 support?

The R260 has four DDR5 ECC UDIMM slots and supports up to 128 GB (4 x 32 GB). The offering includes configurations from 16 to 128 GB.

How many drives does the Dell PowerEdge R260 hold?

Two variants are available in the offering: 2x3.5" Non Hot Plug for HDDs and 6x2.5" for SATA or SAS SSDs. The choice depends on whether the server needs to store large volumes of affordable data or run a fast database.

Which controller to choose: H355, H755, or HBA355i?

H355 is a straightforward hardware RAID controller for Windows Server and VMware. H755 has a cache and performs better with databases. HBA355i does not create RAID, making it suitable for Proxmox and ZFS.

Does the Dell R260 have a redundant power supply?

Configurations in our offering include a single 450 W or 700 W power supply. For continuous operation, add UPS backup power or choose a server with dual power supplies.

Is the Dell R260 suitable for AI and GPU computing?

No. The R260 is an entry-level server for ERP, file services, and small-scale virtualization. For tasks involving GPU cards, choose servers from the AI servers category, such as the Dell PowerEdge R750xa.
