The Dell PowerEdge R7625 is a 2U rack server with two AMD EPYC 9004 processors: up to 256 cores and 6 TB of DDR5 memory in a single chassis. You choose it when one server needs to take over the workload of several older machines: virtualization, VDI, databases, or GPU-accelerated computing.

Dell R7625 server – who is this machine for?

This is Dell's 16th generation: two sockets, EPYC „Genoa", DDR5, and PCIe 5.0. It belongs to the Dell 16th generation rack server family, alongside the Intel-based R760, but plays a different card: core density. For the technically inclined: it offers 12 memory channels per processor, delivering throughput that older platforms could only envy. One note at the outset: the SP5 socket does not accept processors from the R7525, so upgrading means a new platform, not just a CPU swap.

Dell PowerEdge R7625 for virtualization – how many VMs will it support?

24 DDR5 slots and up to 6 TB RAM is a more important figure in virtualization than cores, because memory runs out first. With VMware, Hyper-V, or Proxmox, the most common starting point is 2 × EPYC with 48–64 cores and 256–1024 GB RAM. Populate all 12 channels per processor, because only then do you achieve full throughput. The exact calculation is available in the article how much RAM for a business server.

Dell R7625 for SQL Server and ERP – fewer cores, higher clock speed

Database licenses are counted per core, so a 128-core behemoth can be a costly mistake here. For Microsoft SQL Server and ERP systems, consider the EPYC 9124 (16 cores, 3.0 GHz) or „F" variants such as the 9374F: 32 cores, 3.85 GHz – we will verify availability for your project. The result: a higher clock speed and a lower licensing bill. Add RAID 10 on NVMe and ample memory. A step-by-step layout is available in the guide server for a database.

Dell R7625 – drives, RAID, and NVMe: what to put in the front?

The front is a lottery of chassis options: 8 or 12 × 3.5" (up to 240 TB, for backup and archives), 8, 16, or 24 × 2.5" (up to 368 TB), or up to 32 × E3.S NVMe Gen5. Isolate the operating system on a BOSS-N1 (2 × M.2 in RAID 1) so that the front slots remain available for data. For controllers: H355 as a starting point, H755N for NVMe, H965i for high IOPS requirements. RAID levels are selected as follows: RAID 1 for the operating system, RAID 10 for databases and VMs, RAID 6 for backup. More in the article on whether RAID is worth it, and hardware is available in the server RAID controllers and NVMe drives sections.

Dell PowerEdge R7625 servers with GPU – how many cards will fit?

Two double-slot 300 W cards or six single-slot 75 W cards. The catch: GPU is not supported in the 12 × 3.5" configuration or with the rear drive module. The offering includes configurations with NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 96 GB and L4 24 GB. With high TDP, everything is determined by cooling and power: power supplies range from 800 to 3200 W, and for GPU configurations we target 2400 W. See AI servers and server graphics cards. Networking is handled by OCP 3.0 up to 25 GbE, with the rest covered by network adapters in PCIe slots. Keep in mind the rack cabinet (depth 772 mm, weight up to 34.4 kg) and UPS backup power.

Dell R7625 in the server room – iDRAC9, security, and backup

iDRAC9 provides a remote console, firmware updates, and the Redfish API, so you can manage the server from your desk, even without an operating system installed (a similar mechanism is described in the article on remote access via IPMI). On the security side, you get Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, and Silicon Root of Trust, with cryptographically signed firmware. For backup, we most commonly use the 12 × 3.5" version with RAID 6. How many TB and what type of drives you need can be determined using the guide server for corporate backup. Hardware for larger data volumes is also available among disk arrays.

R7625, R7525, or R760 – which Dell PowerEdge to choose?

Upgrading from the R7525 delivers twice as many cores, DDR5 instead of DDR4, and PCIe Gen5. Is a single socket sufficient? Look at the R7615. Need a 1U chassis? There is the R6625. The AMD versus Intel dilemma is analyzed in the article Intel Xeon vs AMD EPYC, and a lineup overview is available in AMD EPYC processors and in the comparison Dell PowerEdge vs HP ProLiant.

FAQ

What is the Dell PowerEdge R7625 used for?

It is a 2U server with two AMD EPYC 9004 processors for virtualization, VDI, databases, backup, and GPU-accelerated computing. It excels where a single server needs to replace several older machines.

How many cores and how much memory does the Dell R7625 support?

Up to 256 cores (2 × 128) and 24 DDR5 RDIMM modules, meaning up to 6 TB RAM at 4800 MT/s. Each processor has 12 memory channels.

Does the Dell R7625 support GPU cards?

Yes: 2 double-slot 300 W cards or 6 single-slot 75 W cards. GPU is not available in the 12 × 3.5" configuration or with the rear drive module.

What RAID should I choose for the R7625?

RAID 1 for the operating system (e.g., on the BOSS-N1), RAID 10 for databases and virtual machines, RAID 6 for backup and archives. For NVMe drives, you need an H755N or H965i controller.

R7625 or R760 – which server to choose?

Choose the R7625 when core count and memory capacity in 2U are the priority. The R760 has Intel processors, which may be a platform or software requirement.

How does the R7625 differ from the R7525?

DDR5 instead of DDR4, PCIe Gen5 instead of Gen4, up to 256 cores instead of 128, and support for E3.S NVMe drives. Processors from the R7525 are not compatible with the new socket.
